Directions

From Bridlington follow the signs for Flamborough and then pick up the signs for the North Landing. Just before you get to the North Landing you will see the sign for Thornwick Caves and Bird Sanctuary (just before the Viking Hotel - see picture right). Turn in here, pay your £1 at the
hut and follow the track to the parking area.

Thornwick Bay is a northerly facing bay, just around the corner from Flamborough Head. At high water on a sunny day it is one of the most picturesque places I've visited, with its crystal blue water and white chalk cliffs, topped with lush green grass. Fishing here is a real privilege.

Thornwick Bay is located just before the North Landing. Look out for the sign below - this is where you turn in.

There is a cafe next to the parking area which is open throughout the summer season.

Access to the beach is via either the footpath in front of the cafe, or by the footpath to the right of the parking area which is far easier (both marked on the main map). Do not try to use the steps and footpath to the left of the parking area - see below.

Warning signs at Thornwick Bay

If you get the weather, tide, seastate and bait right then Thornwick Bay can throw up some excellent catches.

These two Scarborough anglers had a good cod session.

Caution: Not only can the rocks here be slippery, they can also be very sharp due to masses of barnacles. The paths around the bay can be dangerous when muddy.
